A powerful and richly narrative depiction of Archangel Michael standing triumphant at the center, holding the sword of divine justice and the scroll of heavenly authority. Beneath his feet lies the defeated adversary, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. The upper register presents Christ Emmanuel within the clouds, blessing the scene and affirming the Archangel’s divine mission. On the left and right are carefully painted narrative episodes associated with the Archangel’s intercession and protection of the faithful — a traditional composition often found in 19th-century Russian devotional icons. The warm ochre background, strong cinnabar reds, and detailed wing work reflect the mature provincial Russian style of the period, executed in egg tempera on wood with a hand-applied gesso ground. The icon carries an authentic aged patina, with visible craquelure and minor surface wear consistent with its age. The reverse shows an old hanging cord and natural wood grain, confirming traditional construction.
