A powerful and richly composed representation of the Dormition of the Virgin, showing the Mother of God laid upon her bier, surrounded by the Apostles, while Christ stands above receiving her pure soul depicted as a small radiant child. The engraved gilded background with radiant mandorla and finely tooled halos reflects traditional Russian workshop craftsmanship of the late 19th century. The icon follows strict Orthodox canon, symbolizing the peaceful "falling asleep" of the Theotokos and her heavenly glorification. The vibrant mineral pigments — deep reds, greens, and ochres — remain strong, contrasted beautifully against the luminous gold ground. Hand-painted in tempera on a traditional wooden panel with original rear support slats. Condition: Prominent vertical panel split due to natural wood movement, age-related craquelure, edge wear, and minor paint losses consistent with authentic antique devotional use. Structurally stable and historically significant piece.
