A remarkable representation of the Dormition of the Mother of God, one of the Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church. The Virgin is depicted lying upon her bier surrounded by the Apostles, while Christ stands above holding her soul in the form of a swaddled child, symbolizing her passage into eternal life. Rich gilding and finely engraved borders enhance the sacred and solemn character of the composition. Executed in egg tempera on a wooden panel, this icon displays the elegant drawing, harmonious proportions, and luminous gold background associated with quality Russian icon painting of the mid-19th century. The large format and complete preservation of the traditional Dormition scene give the work exceptional visual presence and devotional significance. The icon retains its historical character with age-appropriate wear, preserved gilding, and a strong original appearance. The traditional two-batten construction remains visible on the reverse, supporting its authenticity and period craftsmanship. Condition: Age-related wear and losses to portions of the gilded border are present, consistent with centuries of devotional use. The painting remains stable and visually attractive, with no obvious evidence of major restoration visible.
