A finely painted Russian Orthodox icon depicting Christ enthroned at the centre of an extended Deesis composition, surrounded by the Mother of God, Saint John the Baptist, Apostles, hierarchs and selected saints in prayer and intercession. Dating to the second half of the 19th century, the icon presents a richly detailed composition with finely rendered facial features, elaborate garments, gilded halos and carefully executed Church Slavonic inscriptions. The arrangement of numerous sacred figures around the enthroned Christ gives the icon a particularly impressive and devotional presence. Executed in traditional egg tempera on levkas on a wooden panel with gilding, the reverse retains two substantial transverse wooden battens characteristic of traditional Russian icon construction. The icon remains in very good antique condition for its age, with age-related wear, minor losses and areas of historical retouching, while retaining strong colours, extensive gilding and finely preserved details.
