A beautiful Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Mother of God with the Christ Child alongside Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, accompanied by a gathering of revered saints including bishops, monastic fathers, and a female martyr. Such composite icons were created for personal devotion, uniting heavenly protectors and patron saints within a single sacred composition. Executed in egg tempera and gilding on a wooden panel, the icon features a finely engraved gold background and decorative border characteristic of traditional Russian icon painting. The rich colors, expressive faces, and intricate ornamentation reflect the spiritual and artistic heritage of the Orthodox tradition. Particularly noteworthy is the extensive gilded ground, which retains its aged character and devotional patina. The natural wear, craquelure, and surface texture acquired over generations contribute to the icon's authentic historical presence and enduring appeal. Condition: Age-related craquelure, surface wear, paint losses, and abrasion to the gilded background. Historical restoration and localized retouching are visible in some areas, consistent with the icon's age and long devotional use. The panel remains stable and displays well.
