A deeply expressive image of the Mother of God, rendered in the traditional Hodegetria manner, where the Virgin is presented as the guide and intercessor. The solemn tilt of the head and refined facial modeling reflect the devotional character of Russian icon painting in the mid-19th century, created for intimate prayer settings rather than monumental church display. Executed in tempera on wood, the icon preserves its original hand-painted face with warm ochre tones and delicate highlights, maintaining a strong spiritual presence. The surrounding garment area is covered with a later-applied silver-toned painted layer, imitating a riza. This addition, likely from the early-mid 20th century, was applied as a devotional enhancement and has naturally aged with wear, revealing areas of the underlying surface. The surface shows honest age, including wear, abrasions, and losses consistent with long-term devotional use. The painted silver layer is visibly aged and partially worn, while the face remains intact with minor craquelure and no intrusive modern overpainting. The wooden panel is stable, with natural patina and a later-added hanging support on the reverse.
