A beautiful and authentic Russian Orthodox icon centered on the Mother of God Hodegetria, surrounded by a gathering of patron saints, martyrs, monastic saints, and bishops. The composition reflects the traditional devotional icons commissioned for family protection and intercession, with the Virgin and Christ Child occupying the place of honor above the assembled saints. The richly engraved gilded background, intricate ornamental border, and elongated saintly figures are characteristic of late 18th-century Russian icon painting. The icon retains its original spiritual presence, enhanced by the warm patina and age acquired over more than two centuries. Executed in egg tempera and gold on a wooden panel, the icon remains fully hand-painted. The reverse preserves its traditional construction with original sliding battens, confirming its period authenticity and supporting a late 18th-century attribution. Condition: Age-related wear and losses to portions of the gilding and painted surface are visible. The reverse shows evidence of historical structural conservation and stabilization, likely undertaken to preserve the panel. Minor localized retouching may be present, but no major modern overpainting. Overall, the icon remains structurally sound and presents well for its age.
