A beautiful Russian icon depicting the revered Mother of God of Smolensk (Smolenskaya), one of the most important and enduring images of the Virgin in Orthodox Christianity. Following the traditional Hodegetria type, the Mother of God gestures toward Christ, presenting Him as the path to salvation and the source of divine wisdom. Painted in traditional egg tempera on a wooden panel with a gilded background, this icon reflects the spiritual depth and artistic traditions of provincial Russian iconography during the early to mid-19th century. The solemn expressions, harmonious composition, and surviving original gilding create a powerful devotional presence that has endured for nearly two centuries.
