A beautiful and authentic Russian icon depicting the Protection (Pokrov) of the Mother of God, one of the most revered feasts in Orthodox Christianity. The composition symbolizes the Virgin's protection and intercession over the faithful, a theme deeply cherished throughout the Russian Orthodox world. This example retains its original embossed silvered metal oklad (riza), richly decorated with traditional geometric and floral ornamentation. The surviving painted faces reveal the icon's hand-painted nature, executed in the traditional egg tempera technique on a wooden panel. The presence of the original period riza adds both historical significance and visual appeal. Dating to the late 18th or very early 19th century, the icon displays the devotional character and craftsmanship associated with Russian religious art of this period. Despite the passage of time, it continues to convey a strong spiritual presence and remains a desirable piece for collectors of Orthodox icons. Condition: Fully hand-painted beneath the oklad. Age-related wear and paint losses are present beneath the metal cover, together with expected wear and oxidation to the original silvered riza. The wooden panel remains consistent with its age and period, preserving its authentic devotional character.
