A remarkable Russian icon depicting the Resurrection of Christ (Anastasis) surrounded by the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, forming a complete visual cycle of the most important events in the life of Christ and the Mother of God. At the center, Christ descends into Hades, triumphing over death and raising Adam and Eve, a powerful image of salvation and eternal life. Executed in egg tempera on a gessoed wooden panel with extensive gold backgrounds, the icon displays the rich devotional character of Russian sacred art from the mid-19th century. The surrounding feast scenes are finely arranged, creating a harmonious theological narrative that would have served both as an object of prayer and a visual summary of the Orthodox liturgical year. Large examples of this subject are especially sought after for their complexity, symbolism, and strong decorative presence. The icon retains its authentic historic character, with beautiful age-related patina, original gilding, and the wear expected from more than a century and a half of devotion and preservation. Condition: Authentic mid-19th century panel with age-related wear, craquelure, and losses to parts of the gilding and paint layer.
