This powerful composition depicts Saint John holding the Eucharistic chalice with the Christ Child symbolically resting within it — a profound theological reference to the Lamb of God and the mystery of sacrifice. In his other hand, he presents a scroll bearing his call to repentance. The richly gilded background with finely tooled geometric border ornamentation reflects the craftsmanship of late 19th century Russian provincial workshops. The elongated facial features, delicate linear highlights in the hair and garments, and the deep red and olive tones are characteristic of devotional icons from this period. Hand-painted in tempera on wood panel, with natural age wear, surface patina, and time-darkened varnish consistent with the 19th century. The back construction and overall aging further support the dating. A meaningful sacred image that has now joined a private collection.
