A striking 19th-century icon depicting The Baptism of Christ (Theophany), one of the most important scenes in Christian iconography. Christ stands in the waters of the Jordan with Saint John the Baptist at His side, while angels reverently attend the sacred event from the opposite bank. Hand-painted on an original wooden panel, the icon is distinguished by its expressive academic-influenced painting and particularly elaborate ornamental border. Rich geometric and floral motifs in gold, blue, green, and red tones frame the central composition, creating an impressive decorative presence while preserving the devotional character of the image. The icon retains its authentic historical character, displaying a deeply aged surface and natural patina. The reverse preserves traditional period construction with two substantial transverse wooden battens, while the aged timber, surface wear, and structural movement of the panel further reflect its long history. Condition: Antique condition with significant age-related wear, scattered paint and ground losses, abrasions, craquelure, and surface deterioration. A pronounced vertical structural crack runs through the central section of the wooden panel, with associated losses and wear. Evidence of historical conservation may be present. Despite its condition, the principal figures and richly ornamented border remain expressive and visually impressive.
