A remarkable 19th-century Russian icon presenting four distinct representations of the Mother of God within a richly gilded quadripartite composition. The upper-left section depicts the Virgin tenderly holding the Christ Child, while the upper-right portrays a contemplative Marian image expressing sorrow and devotion. The lower-left section features the crowned Mother of God embracing the Christ Child, reflecting royal Marian symbolism, while the lower-right presents the Virgin in a prayerful and humble posture. Together, these four sacred representations, accompanied by traditional Church Slavonic inscriptions, form a distinctive devotional composition celebrating the spiritual significance and veneration of the Mother of God. Hand-painted in tempera on levkas on a traditional wooden panel, the icon is distinguished by its extensive gilded backgrounds, expressive facial features, and carefully executed garments. The warm golden surfaces contrast beautifully with the deep red, green, and brown tones of the Virgin’s robes, while delicate highlights and fine ornamental details emphasize the individual character of each representation. The crowned Virgin, intimate depiction of the Christ Child, and carefully arranged four-part composition reflect the artistic traditions of Russian icon painting, incorporating both traditional Byzantine influences and elements of Western-inspired Marian imagery. Dating to the 19th century, the icon retains its authentic historical character, displaying a naturally aged surface and distinctive period patina. The substantial wooden panel consists of joined boards reinforced by two traditional transverse battens on the reverse, showing considerable evidence of age and structural movement. The surviving gilding, naturally worn painted surfaces, darkened inscriptions, and areas of exposed ground further reflect its long devotional history. The combination of four Marian representations and its richly aged appearance gives this icon a particularly distinctive historical and artistic presence. Condition: Overall fair to good antique condition considering its age, with extensive age-related wear, craquelure, scattered paint and ground losses, abrasions, and considerable deterioration to portions of the gilded backgrounds. Several areas reveal the underlying preparation layers, particularly within the lower compartments, while the surrounding borders display natural discoloration and surface wear. The wooden panel shows visible structural movement, including a central vertical joint, with both transverse reinforcing battens preserved on the reverse. Evidence of historical conservation or localized retouching may be present. Despite these age-related characteristics, all four principal Marian compositions remain clearly recognizable, with their expressive facial details, richly coloured garments, and surviving gilding preserving the icon’s devotional character and visual appeal.
