An impressive 19th-century Russian icon presenting a richly detailed multi-compartment composition dedicated to the Mother of God and selected saints. The upper sections feature two distinct representations of the Virgin Mary, including the Mother of God holding the Christ Child and a second devotional image of the Virgin in prayer. The lower sections depict a Marian narrative scene accompanied by Church Slavonic inscriptions, alongside a gathering of revered saints, including bishops, monastic figures, and a warrior saint. Additional saints appear along the outer borders, creating an elaborate and spiritually significant composition. Hand-painted in tempera on levkas on a traditional wooden panel, the icon is distinguished by its extensive gilded backgrounds, finely executed facial expressions, elegant garments, and delicate ornamental details. The contrasting dark robes, luminous golden halos, and carefully structured architectural divisions create a harmonious and visually striking composition. The refined decorative treatment and distinctive arrangement of multiple devotional subjects reflect the artistic traditions of 19th-century Russian icon painting. Dating to the second half of the 19th century, the icon retains its authentic historical character, displaying a naturally aged surface and period patina. The original-style wooden construction features two substantial transverse reinforcing battens on the reverse, with visible signs of age and structural movement. The surviving gilding, traditional painted details, subtle surface abrasions, and natural discoloration further emphasize its historical character and long devotional history. Condition: Overall good antique condition considering its age, with age-related surface wear, minor scattered paint and ground losses, localized abrasions, and natural discoloration to portions of the gilded backgrounds. Small losses are visible along the upper edge and surrounding painted borders, while the wooden panel displays signs of age and structural movement. Evidence of historical conservation or localized retouching may be present. Despite these characteristics, the principal compositions, delicate facial details, gilded halos, and surrounding saints remain beautifully preserved, maintaining the icon’s historical integrity and strong visual appeal.
