A deeply expressive late-19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Mother of God of the Seven Sorrows, with seven swords symbolizing the profound sorrow endured by the Virgin Mary. This powerful image has traditionally been venerated in prayers for protection, reconciliation, peace, and the softening of anger and hostility. Hand-painted in traditional egg tempera on gesso (levkas) over an original wooden panel, the icon is enriched by an elaborate gilded and finely tooled background. The radiant halo, intricate geometric ornamentation, and decorative border are particularly impressive for its small devotional size. The icon retains a beautiful aged patina and strong historical character. Its intimate scale, rich decoration, and meaningful Marian iconography make it a distinctive example of late Imperial Russian devotional art. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related craquelure, scattered paint and gilding losses, rubbing and surface wear. The wooden panel shows an old vertical joint and historical marks to the reverse. Possible light historical conservation or retouching.
