A beautiful antique Russian icon depicting the Mother of God tenderly holding the Christ Child, representing one of the most revered subjects in traditional Russian religious art. The Virgin is portrayed with a gentle, contemplative expression, her head inclined toward Christ, reflecting maternal devotion, spiritual tenderness, and divine protection. The Christ Child appears beside her, facing forward with a solemn expression, symbolizing His divine wisdom and sacred authority. Their delicately painted faces, expressive eyes, and carefully modelled features create a deeply devotional composition. The intimate relationship between the Mother of God and Christ is further emphasized by their richly ornamented garments and magnificent radiant halos, reflecting the enduring importance of Marian iconography within Russian artistic tradition. Hand-painted on a traditional icon panel and adorned with an elaborate embossed and engraved metal oklad, the icon is distinguished by its richly decorated silver-toned covering with a warm golden patina. The ornate metalwork features intricate floral engravings, scrolling patterns, geometric borders, and magnificent radiating halos surrounding the sacred figures. The Virgin’s garments are embellished with delicate ornamental motifs, while the Christ Child’s robes display carefully executed decorative detailing. The contrast between the softly painted faces and hands and the richly worked metallic surface creates a striking visual harmony. The elaborate repoussé decoration and traditional craftsmanship reflect the artistic character of historic Russian icons, where painted devotional imagery was enhanced by beautifully worked protective metal coverings. Attributed to the 19th century, the icon retains a distinctive antique character, combining traditional religious painting with richly ornamented metalwork. The naturally aged surface of the oklad displays a warm patina, subtle discoloration, and signs of historical handling, while the exposed painted areas retain their expressive character. The decorative metal covering features raised floral patterns, engraved details, and carefully arranged openings revealing the original painted faces and hands. The combination of traditional iconography, delicate facial painting, elaborate metal craftsmanship, and visible age-related characteristics contributes to the historical and artistic appeal of this Russian devotional icon. Condition: Overall good antique presentation, with visible age-related wear, surface scratches, tarnishing, and localized discoloration across the decorative metal oklad. The embossed and engraved ornamentation remains largely well defined, although minor dents, irregularities, and areas of wear are visible throughout the covering. The painted faces of the Mother of God and Christ Child remain expressive and recognizable, showing natural darkening, fine surface marks, and possible historical retouching. Slight irregularities are visible around several openings in the metal covering, while the outer edges and corners display signs of age and handling.
